2017 February Chess Tournament

March 1, 2017

Another successful and well attended tournament!

The 2nd annual NECS Spiegel Cup Series tournament set another record for attendance for MA affiliates, 60 kids descended on Temple Emunah'a grounds. Many of the kids were high rated, battle-tested individuals with high ratings, we also had quite a few kids for whom it was their first tournament experience and they certainly got their feet wet.

As a testament to the fierce competition, most sections required a blitz playoff, a 5 minute tie-breaking game often more than 1 round, to determine who walks away with a trophy, and who has to settle for a medal or perhaps even leave empty handed. This was both a moment of glory and defeat but as everything else in life, the young competitors had to learn how to deal with both, and try to learn from the experience towards the future.

We broke for lunch with lots of delicious, complimentary pizza was served and kids got to play games and make new friends, the tournament was ably directly by International Arbiter Matt Phelps assisted by NM Ilya Krasik, NM Chris Williams and Ray Ayrumyan.
